My mare is having difficulty conceiving

Mares which have difficulty conceiving must first be examined by a veterinary surgeon in order to diagnose any potential specific pathological disorders.

In terms of nutrition, care should be taken not to overfeed mares, which would cause excessive weight gain and interfere with ovary function.

This is the case for rations with a very high starch (cereal) content, fed to “non-gestating” mares in excessive quantities.

Excess energy intake produces fat deposits around the ovaries and impedes ovary function.

Chronic protein deficiency does not encourage proper ovary function.

Non-gestating mares without a foal at foot must be fed solely to cover their maintenance requirements.
