This is the case for rations with a very high starch (cereal) content, fed to “non-gestating” mares in excessive quantities.
Excess energy intake produces fat deposits around the ovaries and impedes ovary function.
Chronic protein deficiency does not encourage proper ovary function.
Non-gestating mares without a foal at foot must be fed solely to cover their maintenance requirements.
