A naturally stressed and worried animal, the horse has an especially fragile digestion ; colic and digestive disorders are the main pathologies in equines.
Horses have a precarious intestinal flora.
Horse forage must be perfectly balanced (the horse is, after all, a herbivore).
In the stable it should be given a minimum of 5 kg of good quality hay (if the bedding is wheat straw and 8 kg if the bedding is artificial, plus of course a feed specially developed for its type of use or age (young, old, lactating, in foal…).
This way its digestion is optimised at large intestine level and the presence of a stable and efficient microbial flora encouraged.
Royal Horse feed, with the right kind of flora bio regulators included, encourages a beneficial intestinal flora to the detriment of pathogenic flora (noxious).
For more than 16 years, Royal Horse has been enhancing its feed with pro-biotics, as between 1991 and 2001 with Paciflor (CIP bacillus 5832) or currently with the pre-biotics FOS and MOS.
FOS (fructo-oligosaccaharides) are sugar beet or sugar cane extracts (glucose + fructose). Known as pre probiotics or pre biotics, they stimulate the bifidogenic or lactobacillic flora and target the small intestine.
This bifidogenic flora is extremely important in the horse because of its “barrier” effect, stopping the development of pathogenic bacteria (noxious) and also stimulating the immune system (TEJEDA 99 – GRIZARD 99). FOS also work to prevent colic and digestive disorders.
FOS help increase the volatile fatty acids (VFA) which help to rebuild intestinal walls.
VFA production also reduces pH (CAMBELL 96) thus also reducing pathogenic bacteria development, in particular low pH sensitive coliforms (GOIHL 99).
The horse’s immune system is stimulated by the FOS (immunoglobins IgA and IgG) at intestinal wall level. This is especially good for lactating mares since these immunoglobins pass through the colostrum (first milk) and reinforce the foal’s immune system.
MOS (mannan oligosaccharides) are glucids extracted from the walls of selected yeasts.
They work as a bio regulator on intestinal flora like a bait or a magnet and occupy sites usually fixed by pathogenic flora (noxious) on the intestine walls.
Thus pathogenic flora cannot attach themserlves to the intestine walls (epithelium) and are excreted via dung.
It is very important to stop these pathogenic bacteria from attaching themselves to the intestine wall as they could then produce salmonella and clostridiale type toxins.
MOS work to prevent colic and digestive disorders by acting on these pathogenic bacteria. They have been successfully used for horses for more than ten years.
MOS also work on immune defence systems (POTTER 97) by stimulating immunoglobins (anti bodies) in the blood.
Royal Horse ADJUST range contains MOS and FOS.
Horse health is a major concern for Royal Horse, a well balanced intestinal flora optimises digestion and reinforces immune defences.
A horse with good digestion will also be well balanced and easier to work with.
