Should I give my horse flaked or pelleted feeds ?  - (19/09/2006)

Flaked feeds improve starch digestion by approximately 20 % relative to pellets, as a result of cereal flake processing (steam, micronisation), further reducing the risks of cramps and laminitis.
They are particularly appetising and encourage horses to chew their feed longer and more effectively, hence optimising saliva production.
These presentations are particularly recommended for greedy horses so as to prevent the risks of oesophageal obstruction.
They may be fed dry or mixed with molasses.
Molasses have the advantage of being more appetising due to their sweet taste and capturing any dust particles which are problematic for horses (respiratory disorders).
However, perfectly balanced pelleted feeds, with more competitive prices, may be used.
It should be remembered that horses are animals of habit and the worst thing for them would be to see constant fluctuations in their feed rations.
We shouldn’t put ourselves in the horse’s position.
Although we could not tolerate eating the same food all year round without any variety in taste and flavour, not to mention the pleasurable aspect of food, this is not at all the case for horses.
We should respect this difference, and not develop any anthropomorphism detrimental to the wellbeing of our equine friends.
