Are biotin treatment courses necessary in order to improve hoof condition ?  - (19/09/2006)

Hoof horn needs particular care.
If your horse’s hoof horn is in poor condition, you should try to determine the cause of poor horn condition.
This problem may arise if horses are kept in damp paddocks or from stabling conditions if the bedding is not changed properly and the hooves are in constant contact with wet straw.
A diet solely based on grain mixes rather than balanced feeds also gives rise to poor hoof horn condition.
However, high-quality feeds with perfectly balanced copper, zinc, sulphur amino acid and biotin (vitamin H) content prevent horn deterioration.
Biotin treatment courses are effective when given as daily quantities of 20 to 30 mg for at least 8 months.
Ten-day treatment courses are ineffective and relatively costly.
