The Universal Finnish horse

This saddle horse and light draught horse is thought to have descended from the native pony, crossed with other European breeds, heavy and light. In the past, there were two types:

  • The Trait, a heavy, robust horse with lively gaits.
  • The Universal, aptly named because it was very complete and lighter, was used under saddle, for light transport and harnessed trotting.

A Stud Book was opened in 1907 for both types. Since the 1970s, the main focus has been on the Universal type.
