The Falabella horse

This miniature horse takes its name from the Argentine Falabella family, who developed the breed by crossing a small Shetland pony with a small Thoroughbred near Buenos Aires. The smallest animals obtained were selected and crossed in close inbreeding with each other to fix the dwarfism character (dominant gene). Later, Arabian blood was added. One of the smallest known mares, Sugar Dumpling, measured 51 cm and weighed less than 14 kg.
